‘Zootopia 2’ review: Nick and Judy are back in a beautiful story of love, friendship, and understanding

The world of Zootopia gave fans a look into Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) and her determination to prove herself in the police force. But when Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman) rolls into her life, it all goes up in the air. Now, with Zootopia 2, fans get to experience their friendship in a new way.

Judy and Nick are partners on the police force but Judy’s need to prove herself still takes over and despite her large ears, she’s not the best at listening. Nick and the other officers try to help her but it doesn’t work and the two find themselves on the outs of the rest of Zootopia. Which puts Nick and Judy on the run as they try to find one of the first snakes they’ve seen: Gary De’Snake (Ke Huy Quan).

Zootopia 2 manages to capture the magic of the first film and give us something more to be excited about within the world and the lore of Zootopia. Like how reptiles have always been on the outs with the rest of Zootopia but maybe Gary can change that.

Don’t judge a snake by its cover

Gary De’Snake, like all snakes in my humble opinion, is scary. Mainly because he is a snake and many of us have healthy fears of them. But having Quan voice him is almost a surefire way to make the rest of us happy to see him. Gary is trying to befriend Judy to help him prove that his family and all reptiles are not as scary as people want them to believe and it is a perfect meeting of the minds between Gary and Judy.

Like any good Disney movie, the themes presented in Zootopia 2 are significantly deeper than the surface level concept. Yes, we’re seeing how animals can all live together in a place like Zootopia but we get to also learn a lesson at the same time. We are all, kids and adults alike, forced to remember that judging someone before really knowing them doesn’t help anyone.

And yes, it is cute seeing Gary with his one fang and I love that his last name is “De’Snake” but more than that, I love that he is here to show Judy how to be a good friend and he’s trying to help all of Zootopia.

Okay so maybe Nick and Judy are adorable

Many after Zootopia wanted to see more of Nick and Judy together. While they are separated for a portion of Zootopia 2, the movie does make one thing clear: They are a perfect team. Judy is so into her own vision that she refuses to hear Nick out and, in Nick’s way, he doesn’t really let her know how much it bothers him.

So we are on this journey with Gary De’Snake but really, the lesson is that the key to a good relationship is to be there for one another. And that definitely applies to Judy and Nick. They are two people who love each other but don’t always know how to communicate and it is really beautiful to see how Zootopia 2 shows how the two of them figure out how to be the best partners they can be.

Zootopia 2 is well worth the nearly 10 year wait for it and hopefully we’ll be back with Nick, Judy, and Gary sooner rather than later. Zootopia 2 hits theaters on November 26.
