Zoo offering Valentine's Day opportunity to name cockroach after an ex and feed it to an animal

A zoo in the US is offering a unique Valentine’s Day experience for the forlorn in February for those who wish to give their ex a special message.

The San Antonio Zoo, located in the southern US state of Texas, is offering visitors the opportunity to name a cockroach after an ex-partner they dislike and then feed it to an animal as part of the annual Cry Me a Cockroach fundraiser.

For only a few dollars those wishing to take part in the fundraiser will receive a digital Valentine’s Day card that shows their support for the zoo and they can choose to send their old partner a card that informs them a cockroach has been named after them and fed to an animal.

According to the Zoo, last year the most popular names devoured by animals were Sarah and Jacob.

There are different options for those wishing to donate. For just $5 people can feed a vegetable, for $10 people can feed a cockroach to an animal and those wishing to spring for a bit more can dish out $25 for a rodent.

However, there is also a personalised video package where you can send your ex a video of the cockroach, vegetable or rodent being munched up by an animal.

To submit a donation, head over to the San Antonio Zoo site and fill out your ex-partner’s name before Valentine's Day next month.

In a statement on its website, San Antonio Zoo explains: “For the fourth year, San Antonio Zoo hosts its Cry Me a Cockroach Fundraiser, where funds raised support the zoo’s vision of securing a future for wildlife in Texas and around the world!

“This Valentine’s, join in the fun by donating to symbolically name a cockroach, rodent, or veggie after your not-so-special someone!”
