'Zombie apocalypse' coronavirus buying spree leaves supermarkets empty

Shoppers in Liverpool have described how Aldi has been left looking like a zombie apocalypse has hit after shelves have been left empty.

As coronavirus concerns continue to rise many shoppers have been rushing to stockpile products, while supermarkets have tried to impose temporary restrictions to allow a level playing field.

Toilet roll, hand sanitisers, eggs and tinned goods are among the items in short supply across stores with photographs shared with the ECHO show empty aisles and shelves across all supermarkets including Aldi, Asda, Tesco and more.

Taking to Twitter, many Aldi customers have shared their experience of trying to get their weekly shop at its stores.

User @KirstyLFC21892 said: "F*****g hell, Aldi is mental. Food is running out and everything.

"Never seen so much grey hair. It's like a zombie apocalypse."

Others reported the scenes across stores being "scarier" than the virus itself.

However at Aldi's Dovecot store, shoppers seemed to be in good spirits despite the chaos.

An Aldi spokesperson said: “We have good product availability in our stores and are managing the increased demand for certain items.

"To ensure all customers have the opportunity to purchase these items, we have implemented temporary restrictions on some products, which is communicated in store.”

The scenes across stores follows the announcement made by Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Thursday (March, 12) in which he revealed the country has now moved from the 'contain' phase to the 'delay' phase.

In his speech that night, he also said families would "lose loved ones before their time".
