Zohran Mamdani just made history in New York City, becoming the city’s 111th mayor, the first Muslim to ever wear the crown, and at 34, the youngest to do it in more than a century.
His progressive message struck a chord well beyond the streets of Manhattan, resonating with voters — and fans — across the globe who’ve been desperate for fresh ideas and real change.

At the time of writing, CBS reports that Mamdani has won 677,615 votes, claiming 49.6 per cent of the total race. Andrew Cuomo, the former governor turned independent, received 568,488 votes or 41.6 per cent, while Republican Curtis Sliwa landed 108,377, or 7.9 per cent.

Mamdani was impossible to miss: popping up on TikTok, hosting rallies, even showing up to the club, and talking up practical solutions for New Yorkers dealing with sky-high costs. Free buses, city-run grocery stores, and a promise to freeze rents were centrepieces of his platform — and yes, he wants to make the city’s ultra-wealthy pay their share.
Critics badgered him about his political experience, but Mamdani kept the focus on issues that matter to younger and progressive voters — many voting for the first time.
In the end, his unfiltered campaign style — think TikTok videos, direct conversations on the street and frequent appearances in community spaces helped him win this race and seemingly inspire progressives around the world watching on.
