Zlatan Ibrahimovic tests positive for COVID-19 a week after AC Milan beat Shamrock Rovers in Tallaght

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has tested positive for COVID-19.

AC Milan striker Ibrahimovic has made a strong start to the new season with the Rossoneri and scored both goals in a 2-0 win over Bologna on Monday.

The Swedish hitman also netted the first of Milan’s two goals in their Europa League qualifying win over Shamrock Rovers last Thursday.

But he tested positive for Covid-19, in testing done at the club’s Milanello training ground on Thursday.

He is not the only Milan player to test positive, with defender Leo Duarte testing positive on Tuesday.

Duarte was also part of the squad that travelled to Tallaght.

The positive tests will have no affect on Rovers' continuing league campaign, as they push for a first title since 2011.

Milan face Bodo-Glimt in the Europa League on Thursday night.

The Rossoneri confirmed the news in a statement, declaring: "Zlatan Ibrahimović has tested positive for Covid-19 following a second round of swab tests ahead of tonight's game against Bodø/Glimt.

The entire squad and staff had been re-tested following Duarte's positive earlier this week.

Both men must now spend time in quarantine, and Ibrahimovic's absence will be a major blow to Stefano Pioli's men.

Ibrahimovic may turn 39 on October 5th, but he begun the 2020-21 season in fine fettle, scoring three times in Milan's opening two games.

He remains a key focal point to their attack - but now they face being without him until after the next international break.
