Zlatan Ibrahimovic statue vandalised in former Man Utd striker's hometown

A statue of Zlatan Ibrahimovic erected in his hometown of Malmo has fallen victim to another act of vandalism.

In the most damaging attack yet, the sculpture paying homage to the former Man Utd striker has been pulled over leaving it barely attached to the base.

Protesters have already targeted the statue on numerous occasions previously, in response to Ibrahimovic investing in rival Swedish club Hammarby.

Ibrahimovic started his career with Malmo FF , but his association with Hammarby has angered fans of his first club.

The statue had been sawn at the ankles in the last incidence, causing it to lean up against a surrounding barrier installed to protect it from further damage, until the attack on Saturday night caused further ruin.

Ibrahimovic was forced to file a 'hate crime' complaint with police after the first attack in November, after the door of his Stockholm home had the word 'Judas' daubed across it.

Fans had already set the statue on fire and covered it in paint, and have since removed the nose of the sculpture .

Locals have already requested removal of the statue - which was only unveiled to the public in October.

A decision on whether to keep the bronze figure will be considered in February.

Malmo deputy mayor Frida Trollmyr said: "I can understand that many people are disappointed in Zlatan's behaviour but vandalising a statute is simply unworthy.

"Better to express your dissatisfaction in a democratic way."

Ibrahimovic meanwhile has just started his second spell with Italian side AC Milan.

The 38-year-old completed his switch to the Serie A giants having played for them previously back in 2010-2012.

He scored on his first appearance back at the club, in a 9-0 friendly win over Rhodense.

The move could be his last stint in professional football, after he signed an initial six-month deal with the option to extend by a further year.

Ibrahimovic said upon his signing: "I'm looking for the last bit of adrenaline I might have. At my age you're not looking for anything else but a challenge."
