Zlatan Ibrahimovic's AC Milan transfer could be great news for Chelsea and Frank Lampard

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is back in European football.

From January 2, 2020 the former Manchester United striker will be in AC Milan colours once again as he's rejoined the struggling Serie A side on an initial six-month contract following his release from LA Galaxy.

The 38-year-old will have the option of a further year at the San Siro, although that's likely to depend on the club's fortunes during the second half of the season.

Ibrahimovic returns to Milan to find a club in a completely different place from when he departed in the summer of 2012.

In his first spell with the Rossoneri he was part of the team which won a Serie A title and an Italian Super Cup, but the 2019/2020 squad currently find themselves 11th in the table and a massive 21 points behind the leaders.

It's certainly a huge challenge, one that Ibrahimovic is relishing.

"I'm coming back to a Club I hugely respect and to the city of Milan I love," he told the club's official website. "I’ll fight together with my teammates to change the course of this season.

"I will do everything to make it happen".

Ibrahimovic's return to Milan could be fantastic news for Chelsea and Frank Lampard.

The west London outfit have been heavily linked with a move for RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner ahead of the January transfer window and football.london understands there's a chance of him leaving next month despite the Bundesliga side being in title contention and the last 16 of the Champions League.

That could be because Leipzig are reportedly eyeing Krzysztof Piatek as a replacement for the Germany international.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Poland international's future at the San Siro is uncertain following Ibrahimovic's arrival which could mean some activity involving all three clubs next month.

The Blues are no strangers to a triple transfer merry-go-round.

In the 2018 January window the were involved in a deal which saw Olivier Giroud arrive at Stamford Bridge as a replacement for Michy Batshuayi who had Borussia Dortmund on loan to fill the boots of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang following his move to Arsenal.

Could history repeat itself? Well, one part of a potential triple deal has already been completed.
