Zlatan Ibrahimovic could return from injury for AC Milan to play a part against his former club Manchester United on Thursday night.

Ibrahimovic missed the first leg of Milan's Europa League round-of-16 tie against United last week through injury, but is in contention to be included in the Rossoneri squad for the return leg.

Milan coach Stefano Pioli confirmed on Wednesday that Ibrahimovic has recovered sufficiently to play some part against United, but hinted that the striker may be used off the bench given he is not fit enough for a full match.

"We'll see what choices I'll make tomorrow," Pioli said. "His return to the squad is important for us but clearly he won't be able to play for 90 minutes."

The 39-year-old star - who this week sensationally earned an Sweden recall five years after retiring from international football - joined United in 2016 on a free transfer.

Ibrahimovic led United to Carabao Cup glory before a serious knee injury ended his season, though the club went on to lift the Europa League.

The Swede then made the move to LA Galaxy, spending two seasons in MLS before returning to Europe with Milan. Despite nearing 40, Ibrahimovic remains prolific in Italy with 11 goals last season and 16 in 21 appearances this term.
