Zip wire stunt proves fearless Margaret, 101, is a great gran

A Gatehouse great-grannie careered down a giant zip wire for the NHS – 49 days after her 101st birthday.

Daredevil Margaret McConchie had “no fear” during her white-knuckle ride at Laggan Outdoor on Friday.

And the sprightly centenarian soon got another thrill ... her exploits netted NHS Charities Together almost £13,000.

Margaret, in whose honour grandson Duncan named the nearby GG’s Yard venue, said: “Heights and I don’t get on particularly well.

“Stepping into space was the worst part but once I was on it was marvellous.

“I had no fear. I have done it twice before and loved every second.

“I just wished I could stop halfway along to enjoy the view but it passed very fast.”

The zip wire is almost a kilometre long and runs 30 metres above the hillside.

Margaret set herself a cash target of £1,919, the year of her birth, for completing the challenge.

Windy days were out so she waited for a calm sunny day to “fly like a red arrow – wearing my red lipstick”.

Beating her goal by more than 600 per cent exceeded her wildest expectations.

“It’s wonderful. I’m thrilled to bits,” said Margaret.

“The money is still coming in.

“I’m very enthusiastic about NHS Charities Together.

“I have had occasion to use the service so I know that they are jolly good.

“It is wonderful to know that they are there and I still feel strong.”
