Zinedine Zidane speaks out on Gareth Bale's future and why he was denied Real Madrid send off

Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane has apologised for not bringing Gareth Bale on to the pitch in what was expected to be his final game for the club.

In his six seasons in the Spanish capital, the former Tottenham Hotspur winger has won the Champions League on four occasions as well as lifting the La Liga title and other cups.

He was named on the bench in his side's loss to Real Betis on the final weekend of the league season but was not brought on by Zidane.

Bale is expected to leave the Bernabeu this summer and it was assumed that he would be given the opportunity to say goodbye to home supporters on the pitch during the game.

The Welshman has been heavily-linked with a return to the Premier League with Manchester United in recent seasons.

Given his past history at Spurs, they have also been named as potential suitors although the finances required to bring the Welshman back to north London would make a deal unlikely, even on loan.

Speaking after the 2-0 loss to Betis, Zidane refused to confirm whether the 29-year-old would be pushed out as the Frenchman seeks to rebuild his squad this summer.

"I do not know if it was the last game," he said, as reported by AS. "Now we will see what will happen.

"I do not know what's going to happen, lately I've used other players. I make decisions and I make changes, next year everything can happen."

On Bale's hopes to have his moment on the pitch at the Bernabeu as a send off to his Real Madrid career, Zidane said: "It's true, I have not done it, I'm sorry, but nobody knows what's going to happen.

"I have to see day to day, when I see something that does not fit I have to do things the way I think. Nobody is going to change what Bale has done, but as a coach I have to live in the present.

"I make these decisions when it is right to do so, and I must act in the best interests of the team at all times."
