Zinedine Zidane's ultimate XI named as Real Madrid greats join World Cup winners

He was a very, very good footballer, but when even Zinedine Zidane took to a pitch he always needed to have 10 players alongside him.

After emerging at Cannes and then Bordeaux in his native France, it was over 10 years at Juventus and Real Madrid between 1996 and 2006 that Zidane - now a highly-successful manager of Real - staked his claim to be one of the very best players to ever grace the game, but he couldn't do it alone.

Both in Italy and Spain, as well as internationally, the cast of characters Zidane played alongside is vast and impressive, so it makes sense to make him the next legend to receive our teammates' treatment.

Here's Zinedine Zidane's ultimate XI.

Goalkeeper: Iker Casillas

The dependable last line of defence throughout Zidane's five years at the Bernabeu, Casillas won the Champions League in 2002 and La Liga in 2003 alongside the Frenchman.

Right-back: Michel Salgado

Appearances with Zidane: 194

Salgado would later end up at Blackburn Rovers (Reuters)

A Real Madrid player for 10 years - including all five of Zidane's at the club - Salgado was a dependable presence on the right of the Real defence, and was called the "hardest man I ever played with" by Steve McManaman.

Centre-back: Ivan Helguera

Appearances with Zidane: 175

Helguera was an unassuming figure at Madrid (Reuters)

After spells at Roma and Espanyol, it was at Real where Helguera really found himself as a player.

He stayed at the club for eight years and picked up two Champions League winners' medals.

Centre-back: Paolo Montero

Appearances with Zidane: 148

The tough, uncompromising Uruguayan defender was at Juventus for all of Zidane's five years in Turin, winning two Serie A titles alongside him.

Left-back: Roberto Carlos

Appearances with Zidane: 203

No player has played more game with Zidane than the Brazilian (Reuters)

The only man to play more than 200 games with Zidane, the Brazilian left back memorably supplied the cross for his famous strike in the 2002 Champions League final.

Midfield: Didier Deschamps

Appearances with Zidane: 153

The pair lift the European Championships trophy together (Reuters)

Zidane's former Juventus teammate and his captain as France won both the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000, Deschamps was the archetypal 'water carrier' for a French team that indulged their No.10's flar.

Midfield: Alessio Tacchinardi

Appearances with Zidane: 150

The Italian might have been a fairly unheralded figure outside of Italy, but he played over 400 games for Juve and was in Turin for all of Zidane's five seasons.

Midfield: Guti

Appearances with Zidane: 160

Homegrown product Guti found a spot in the team among the Galacticos (Getty Images)

A product of the Real academy, Guti rubbed shoulders with some wonderful players during his 15 seasons in the first team - including Zidane for five years.

Attack: Luis Figo

Appearances with Zidane: 165

Figo joined Real in 2000, a year before Zidane did (Reuters)

The original Galactico, it was Figo's controversial arrival from Barcelona which kickstarted Real's attempts at recruiting the very best, with Zidane arriving the following year and the Champions League a year after that.

Attack: Raul

Appearances with Zidane: 186

Raul was a an idol to the Real fans (Reuters)

Another who, like Guti, emerged from the club's academy - after leaving Atletico Madrid's - Raul became a Real Madrid idol in the No.7 shirt long before Cristiano Ronaldo did.

Attack: Christophe Dugarry

Appearances with Zidane: 156

Dugarry won 55 caps for France (Reuters)

A surprise to finish, but Dugarry did play with Zidane for four years at Bordeaux and alongside him for France's 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000 winners.

Oh, and he played for Birmingham City too.

Subs: Huard (131), Lizarazu (189), Iuliano (148), Ferrara (143), Pessotto (144), Del Piero (147), Ronaldo (139).
