Zinedine Zidane’s former team-mate Alessandro Del Piero has told Manchester United the Frenchman would be a “good fit” as the club’s manager.
United are on the lookout for a new boss after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked on Sunday following a dismal run of results and performances.
Mauricio Pochettino is the frontrunner for the job, with United confident of appointing the PSG boss, who is interested in making a return to the Premier League.
United sources have played down speculation linking Zidane with a move to Old Trafford but that hasn't stopped some fans from dreaming of his appointment.
The former Real Madrid boss has been out of work since leaving the Bernabeu in the summer, having returned for a second stint with the Spanish giants in 2019.
It has been suggested the former midfielder is happy to wait for an offer to manage the French national team or PSG, which could play into his hands should Pochettino make the move to United.
But, while Del Piero believes his former Juventus team-mate is still set on taking a break from football, he believes he would suit United.
“I think he is taking some time off,” Del Piero told Sky Sports News.
“Last time I spoke with him, he explained how tough it is to become a coach. I’m approaching the coaching licence now as well so I see you have to be there in every aspect, to be on top of everything.
“He told me how tough and demanding it is, in terms of timing, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
“So he is probably taking some time off. But I don’t know. I see Zidane as a good fit for Manchester United. But I don’t know what they are looking for.”
