Zinedine Zidane makes Paul Pogba transfer decision as European deadline approaches

Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane hasn't given up on the possibility of signing Manchester United's Paul Pogba before the European transfer window slams shut on September 2.

Los Blancos have been rumoured with a move for the French midfielder since Pogba announced his desire for a "new challenge" at the end of last season.

So far Madrid have made no formal offer for the 26-year-old, but according to Marca there still remains a chance that they could test United's resolve with a bid in the coming days.

United are said to value Pogba at around €200million (£180m), which Madrid see as too expensive, with the club having already spent over £300m this summer on the likes of Eden Hazard, Luka Jovic and Eder Militao.

However Zidane seems determined to land his man, and is said to be a huge admirer of the player, believing he could be the missing piece needed for his side to beat Barcelona to the La Liga title this season, with Madrid not having won the league since 2017.

Pogba himself is said to still be keen on a change of scene but will not force an exit through, even though he harbours desires to link up with his fellow countryman Zidane and experience the Spanish league.

Much may depend on the future of PSG star Neymar, who Madrid are also chasing.

Madrid will not be able to afford both players, but Neymar is said to be nearing a move to their rivals Barcelona. Madrid see the Brazilian as somebody who could help with their current lack of goals, but privately feel the transfer may be too complicated to pull off.

Madrid have won one and drawn one of their opening two games of the La Liga season, and next face a trip to Villarreal on Sunday.
