Zinedine Zidane makes Gareth Bale decision as Matt Doherty faces fresh criticism over Spurs form

Here are your Tottenham morning headlines for Sunday, March 7.

Doherty's Spurs struggles highlighted

Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan believes Matt Doherty has struggled to fit in at Tottenham since his summer transfer from Wolves.

“He’s somebody that doesn’t seem have settled easily into life in London or at Tottenham. It is worrying because they haven’t got an abundance of right-backs there," he told Football Insider.

“You really need that wing-back to be everything because that is what’s so important to their side right now.

“It’s not only defending but getting forward, overlaps getting into good areas, showing that quality.

“When you’ve got one player not doing it on one side, it weakens you.”

Jenas discusses Spurs' top four chances

Former Tottenham midfielder Jermaine Jenas believes his old side will be thinking they can get into the Premier League top four after their recent upturn in form.

“It wasn’t even a conversation at one point [top four]," he said, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live.

“We have been speaking about energy, positive and negative and the impact that can have on the team, but right now Tottenham have got that wave of energy, they are looking up and thinking ‘right, we can get there now all of a sudden’.

“There are a few teams like Leicester, by the way, who are on the other side of the coin, having lost some of their key players and they have the memory of what happened last season, and ‘can we hang on’ is their mentality.

“Little shifts like that have a big impact."

Zidane makes Bale decision

Zinedine Zidane does not want Gareth Bale back at Real Madrid.

That's according to reports in Spain, which claim the Welshman is not likely to return to Santiago Bernabeu while Zidane remains in charge.

Bale has returned to form in recent weeks, scoring four goals in his last three appearances for Tottenham, looking more like his old self after a disappointing first half of the season in north London.

With Bale's return to form, questions have surfaced whether he could be welcomed back to Real Madrid when his loan spell ends following this season, but it seems that won't be the case.

Despite Bale's agent claiming the forward still loves the city of Madrid, reports from Defensa Central claim Zidane will not accept Bale's return ahead of next season, 'even if he scores 20 or 30 goals' this season.

The report claims that Zidane told Real Madrid president Florentino Perez upon Bale's loan departure that even if he scored 30 goals at Spurs, he would not want him back.

That is not something Zidane has said publicly, although he had previously been quoted in 2019 as saying: "If he goes tomorrow, so much the better."

The Real Madrid boss insisted. however, after Bale's return to north London that he never had a problem with the Welshman, adding: "There will always be things that happen. Now he's making a change, all we can do is wish him the best... These things happen in football, but I've always said he was a spectacular player."
