Zinedine Zidane lets fly at Real Madrid players after latest lacklustre display

Zinedine Zidane has let rip at his Real Madrid players after their failure to beat Leganes on Monday night.

Los Blancos drew 1-1 with the La Liga minnows, falling behind on the stroke of half-time to Jonathan Silva before Karim Benzema equalised with his 27th goal of the season in all competitions.

The draw leaves them 13 points off league leaders Barcelona and four points behind rivals Atletico in second place, with the feel-good factor brought by Zidane's return to the club having stalled.

And after this latest lacklustre display, the Frenchman used his press conference to demand more from his star-studded lineup.

"I as the coach and they as the players have to try," Zidane said. "We have to try and perform better because it's our duty.

"We didn't have a good first half, but improved after the break.

"We all have to give a bit more."

Benzema is Madrid's top scorer this term, and has scored seven goals in the club's last six league fixtures.

However, there remains speculation that Madrid are looking for a new No.9 this summer, with Mauro Icardi continuing to be linked with a switch to the Santiago Bernabeu.

Zidane paid tribute to his compatriot, stating: "Benzema is having a very good season, particularly as far as goals are concerned.

"He's a fantastic player and this season he's scoring far more goals. I'm delighted for him.

"He's used to rumours, but that won't change anything for him. He's shown his character and he's doing a good job for the team."
