Zinedine Zidane concedes "something's up" with Eden Hazard as injury can't be explained

Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane admits he's at a loss to explain the nature of Eden Hazard's latest injury as the Belgian has been forced out of Tuesday's Champions League clash with Atalanta.

Hazard made his latest comeback from a muscle problem when he came on for the final 15 minutes of Saturday's 2-1 win over Elche, his first appearance since the end of January.

But when questioned about the nature of the new problem at his press conference on Monday, Zidane said: "It's something new. I can't really give any more of an explanation."

The Belgian has only played 36 times across his two seasons at Real Madrid ever since joining from Chelsea in a dream move in the summer of 2019, scoring four goals.

Hazard's fitness, or lack of it, has become a hot topic in the Spanish media, where his frequent injury issues are being likened to those of Gareth Bale at the club.

The Welshman was said to have something of a mental block when it came to his fitness, and that term is now being used to describe Hazard.

Zidane was pressed further on the attacker at his press conference, eventually conceding: "Something's up, because he was never injured in his entire career [before joining Real Madrid] or there were very few injuries.

"We want to help him and hope he's back as soon as possible.

"They're things that I can't explain. I want to be positive and hope that it's not too much of a problem.

"We're going to try and figure out why it's happening but right now we can't explain it."

Real lead 1-0 from the first leg of the last-16 tie thanks to Ferland Mendy's late goal in the first leg in Bergamo.
