Zinchenko coach picks out the quality that made his Man City career under Pep Guardiola

Ukraine coach Andriy Shevchenko has praised the versatility of Manchester City's Oleksandr Zinchenko.

The 23-year-old arrived at the Etihad four years ago on the back of some encouraging performances for his country in Euro 2016, but there seemed little chance of him breaking into the first team. City were open to moving him on in 2017 following an uneventful loan at PSV, and again the following year when Wolves offered £16m.

Zinchenko opted to stay on both occasions, and was rewarded with a new contract in 2019 after converting to left-back. A player that arrived as an attacking midfielder showed Pep Guardiola that he could adapt and earned a place in the first team with his ability and attitude.

Shevchenko has played Zinchenko in a defensive midfield role and talked up his understanding of the game.

"We have lots of good players," he told VBET News.

"Even in England, we have Zinchenko who plays for Manchester City. A great player who can play in different positions. A very intelligent player."

Zinchenko started the season as first-choice left-back with Benjamin Mendy injured again but has failed to make it his own. The manager shuffled between those two and Angelino in the first half of the season.

With Angelino now on loan at RB Leipzig and making noises about being happier there, competition for a place at City is reduced but left-back could be looked at in the transfer market again with the club having shelved plans for that area before last summer.
