'Zidane, Cafu and...' - Andy Reid reveals Nottingham Forest great is on his list of best players

Nottingham Forest legend Andy Reid has revealed the best players he ever played with and against during his illustrious career.

Reid made 290 appearances over two spells with the Reds, scoring 42 goals for the club.

He also played for Tottenham Hotspur, Charlton Athletic, Sunderland, Sheffield United, Blackpool and Republic of Ireland.

Reid named another City Ground hero, Roy Keane, as the best player he played alongside.

"Roy had a thing that when you played with him, he had an effect on everybody else on the pitch," Reid told BBC Radio Nottingham's The Terrace show.

"So everybody else on the pitch, I found their performance went up by one or two per cent.

"Now, if everybody else's performance goes up by one or two per cent because of one person who is playing, that means your team's performance is going up by between 10 and 20 per cent, which is absolutely massive.

"I've never seen that from a player before.

"Then, obviously, technically, he passed the ball really well, won his headers, won his tackles, and was a real leader."

On Keane the man, Reid added: "He was always really good with me.

"I know people have had their issues with him but Roy was always very good with me as a player, and then he signed me as a manager with Sunderland.

"So I've always got on really well with Roy and I don't have anything bad to say about him.

"He's got that presence about him and he's always had that.

"I take people how I find them and I've always got on well with him.

"I've seen people fall out with him but he's always been good with me.

"Listen, I'm not saying he's perfect by any stretch of the imagination. None of us are, but that's how I've found him."

As for the best players Reid played against, he picked out a couple - Brazil full-back Cafu and France playmaker Zinedine Zidane.

This is what Nottingham Forest need to do in January if they are realistically going to challenge for promotion

"I don't mean to name drop but there are two in particular that really stand out for me," he said.

"One was Cafu. We played against Brazil at Lansdowne Road and he was absolutely phenomenal.

"I think he was about 36 or 37 at the time, and he was just up and down.

"Me and Ian Harte played the left side together and it was almost like we had two left-backs!

"He was brilliant - so good on the ball and a real handful.

"They had a ridiculous team out that night, and how we got a 0-0 draw that night, I'll never know!

"The other one that really stands out is (Zinedine) Zidane.

"He was phenomenal - so strong, so aware of where he was on the pitch.

"You'd go to close him down and he'd get his body in and just manipulate the ball. You couldn't get anywhere near him.

"He just dictated the whole pace of the game. He was absolutely phenomenal."
