Beijing’s intensified censorship campaign is increasingly obscuring signs of social unrest, according to China Dissent Monitor, resulting in a sharp drop in documented protests.
The project operated by US advocacy group Freedom House recorded 846 protest events last quarter, down 45% from a year earlier. In a report published on Thursday, it also estimated a 50% drop between March and June in protest-related posts on social media platform Douyin.
Researchers attributed much of that decline to a crackdown on online information that began earlier this year ahead of the annual political meetings of China’s rubber-stamp legislature.
