Zero tolerance policy against crime a farce, says Akhilesh Yadav on law and order situation in UP

LUCKNOW: Samajwadi Party president and leader of opposition in the UP legislative assembly, Akhilesh Yadav, on Tuesday attacked the BJP government on the law and order situation in the state.

Speaking on the adjournment motion on the second day of the first Budget session of the Yogi government 2.0, Akhilesh Yadav referred to incidents reported from Chandauli, Prayagraj and Lalitpur.

"The government’s claim of zero tolerance is a farce as crime rate has increased manifold. Just a day before the governor’s address on the floor of the house, a 19-year-old girl was raped. This proves that the state has a dubious distinction of being on number one when it comes to crime against women," Akhilesh said.

"The government is not sensitive even on incidents of serious crime. It boasts of an improved law and order situation in the state but it should know how a BJP worker was beaten black and blue at a police station in Rampur," he added.

Referring to media reports about Yogi telling party workers to stay away from transfers and postings, Akhilesh said the CM’s statement was a clear indication that BJP men were involved in such practices.

"In the name of raids, police are wreaking havoc on innocent people. Most of the incidents of crime are against women," Akhilesh said while referring to incidents in Chandauli, Prayagraj and Lalitpur.

He said it was beyond imagination that in a state where talks about zero tolerance against crime were on, police in Chandauli was hanging a girl’s body to mislead people.

"The CM should answer if a zero tolerance policy is adopted once a crime is committed, then what policy is being adopted to stop crime against women," he asked.

Referring to the Siddharthnagar incident, Akhilesh alleged that the police killed an innocent woman and framed someone else in the case. "Later, the government started ‘managing’ the family members of the deceased," he claimed.
