Zenit star who scored against Celtic jailed for 18 months over Moscow assaults

Two highly-paid Russian football players have been jailed over their involvement in violent attacks that shocked Moscow.

Zenit St Petersburg forward Alexander Kokorin , who scored against Celtic last year, was sentenced to 18 months in jail while fellow Russian internationalist Pavel Mamayev was ordered to serve 17 months.

The pair had been held in custody over the attacks which were captured on CCTV on October 8, 2018.

Kokorin was in Glasgow in February 2018 for Zenit's Europa League tie against Celtic . The Parkhead side lost 3-1 on aggregate, with the striker scoring one of the goals against the Hoops in the return leg.

Footage circulated widely by Russian media last October shows a man being kicked and punched by a group of people and another incident in which two civil servants were assaulted in a cafe.

The two footballers were present at both incidents.

Video of the first incident appears to show Mamaev, who is wearing a white beanie hat, and Kokorin, who has a black hoodie on, getting involved in a bust up with a taxi driver.

Further video footage shows an attack on Trade Ministry official Denis Pak at a Mosvo cafe hours later, after he reportedly complained about the behaviour of the players and their friends.

Kokorin last year told the court he repented and apologised to one of the victims, but the court rejected his lawyer's request to release him pending trial.

Kokorin has 48 caps for Russia but missed last year's World Cup in his home country with a knee injury.

Mamayev – who plays for Krasnodar – has represented the national team 15 times but also was not included on the World Cup squad.

The football stars now face possible sanctions from their clubs following their convictions.
