Zendaya is set to receive the fifth annual SeeHer Award at the Critics Choice Awards on March 7, the group behind the show announced Wednesday.
The Emmy-winning actor and activist will receive the honor from her “Malcolm & Marie” costar John David Washington during the ceremony hosted by Taye Diggs, the Critics Choice Association said.
The SeeHer Award recognizes women who “push boundaries, defy stereotypes and acknowledge the importance of authentic portrayals of women across the entertainment landscape,” the association said.
The #SeeHer movement was started in 2016 by media and marketing professionals seeking to eliminate gender bias in advertising, media and entertainment.
The group, touted by celebrity ambassadors Katie Couric and Busy Philipps, developed the widely adopted Gender Equality Measure scoring system that proved content portraying females accurately can improve both purchase intent and brand reputation.
Actors Kristen Bell, Viola Davis, Claire Foy and Gal Gadot previously received the SeeHer Award.
“We are delighted to be presenting the award to Zendaya, who is such a strong representation of what it means to be a woman in 2021,” SeeHer President Nadine Karp McHugh said in a statement.
“One of the busiest rising stars in Hollywood — with a generation of Disney Channel fans, Marvel devotees and ‘Euphoria’ evangelists — she is a role model and leading voice of her generation,” Karp McHugh said.
Zendaya, 24, became the youngest actress to win an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama when she picked up the honor last September for her role in the HBO series “Euphoria.”
She starred in and helped produce “Malcolm & Marie,” now streaming on Netflix, which centers on a relationship drama involving a writer-director and his girlfriend on the night of his latest film’s premiere.
Zendaya’s role in the pandemic-filmed flick earned her a Critics Choice Award nomination for best actress.
“Happy Valentine’s Day from Marie (If you’re watching our movie tonight with your significant other...we’re sorry lol),” she wrote in a Sunday Instagram post alluding to the outcome for her on-screen couple.
