Zendaya, Nicole Kidman and Margot Robbie hit the 2019 Elle Women in Hollywood Awards in New York

A host of big and small screen stars hit the red carpet in New York on Monday night for the 2019 ELLE Women in Hollywood Awards.

Currently promoting their hotly anticipated movie Bombshell, Margot Robbie and Nicole Kidman posed for the cameras together in co-ordinating black ensembles.

Never a slouch when it comes to style, Euphoria actress Zendaya turned out in a fashion forward grey look featuring a blazer, skirt, button-up blouse and a belt.

The night's honorees included Mindy Kaling, Natalie Portman and Nicole Kidman.

In a speech, Portman said gender parity would be achieved when women are allowed to mess up as much as men.

"How will we know if we've reached equality?" Portman asked. "When mistakes are forgivable or when the post-mistake learning is real, people of all genders get the second chance that men currently do."

“Go out post-mistake and succeed, wildly" she said.

On stage Nicole Kidman revealed her daughter would like to be a director. "That right there, that is progress" she said, "For that little girl to be able to say, 'Yeah, I can be a director' – I would never have said that. I said I could be an actress, but I never said a director."

When Gwyneth Paltrow took to the stage she joked she had not prepared a speech "'cause I'm drunk and I'm just the lame old white lady."
