Zendaya's Emmy win branded 'biggest upset' - but it was a misunderstanding

Zendaya made history after being named the youngest recipient of the Lead Actress in a Drama Series award at this year's Emmys for her lead role in HBO’s  Euphoria .

The 24-year-old actress and singer beat Olivia Colman, Laura Linney, Jennifer Aniston, Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer in the category.

The synopsis for the HBO series says: " Euphoria  follows a group of high school students as they navigate love and friendships in a world of drugs, sex, trauma, and social media. Actor and singer Zendaya leads an ensemble cast including Hunter Schafer, Jacob Elordi, Algee Smith and Sydney Sweeney."

Detailing her shock victory the star wrote: "Still don’t really have any words....feeling so much love right now, thank you" and everyone was thrilled for her.

But when the New York Post described the win as an "upset", fans were quick to defend her, accidentally misinterpreting the phrase.

Detailing the win the New York Post tweeted: "Biggest upset: Zendaya wins Emmys 2020 over Jennifer Aniston, Laura Linney."

One person said: "Who is upset exactly? Because it’s not me."

Another added: "Absolutely no one is upset at this."

And: "Why label it an upset when it’s a celebration?" said a third.

But it turns out fans who rushed to defend Zendaya got the wrong end of the stick.

Fans made a mistake (Daily Record)

One person explained: "To everyone in the replies: 1. 'Biggest Upset' means unexpected victory, essentially the underdog won.

"2. People didn't expect Zendaya to win because of race. Calm down. People didn't expect her to win because Jennifer Aniston is an industry giant, which usually win."

However despite knowing the context of the word a few people still thought "it was in poor taste."

As one said: "Whether 'upset' was used disrespectfully or not, why not choose a better headline altogether. One that focuses on Zendaya winning and not who else could’ve won?"

And another added: "I know what this means and still, it was in poor taste."

Zendaya has not commented on the discussion.
