Zendaya and John David Washington shot a whole film during the coronavirus pandemic

Zendaya and John David Washington have shot an entire feature-length film during the coronavirus pandemic, it has been revealed.

Production has been halted on most films during lockdown, with release dates pushed back on dozens of films, but the pair have found a way of working together on the new project Malcolm & Marie.

The film is described by Deadline as having echoes of Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story. It was filmed between June 17 and July 2 at Caterpillar House, an environmentally friendly home in Carmel Valley, California.

According to reports, shooting was approved by the major entertainment industry unions and adhered to the state’s Covid-19 protocols. There was a limit of 12 people on set at any one time, as well as temperature checks at the beginning and end of every day and extra time allowed to sanitise equipment.

Zendaya confirmed the film on Instagram, posting a still of her and Tenet star Washington, along with the film’s title.

The film is said to have come about after Zendaya, 23, teamed up with Euphoria creator Sam Levinson, who wrote Malcolm & Marie in six days.

The movie, which appears to be the first feature film to be made since the industry was put on hold in March, has yet to be given a release date.
