Zelensky to visit US in coming days as Ukraine backs peace deal, official says

Ukraine will back the peace deal with Russia following talks with the US in Geneva, it has been reported.

A Ukrainian official said on Tuesday that the "essence" of the peace plan is supported by Ukraine, but some of the most sensitive issues of the framework remain to be discussed.

Even as both warring sides exchanged overnight strikes, Ukraine's national security chief said that President Volodymyr Zelensky could fly to the US in the next few days to finalise a deal with President Donald Trump.

The breakthrough comes after a revised plan was put forward which cut the original 28 points down to 19.

That original plan banned NATO membership for Ukraine, capped its army at 600,000, proposed handing the rest of Donbas to Russia and mandated that Kyiv hold elections within 100 days.

Revisions reportedly include removing amnesty guarantees for atrocities committed during the war and an expansion of Kyiv’s army cap to 800,000 men.

Rustem Umerov, a top official in Zelensky's government, described the meetings between Ukrainian and US delegations as “productive and constructive” in a post on X this morning.

He said: “Our delegations reached a common understanding on the core terms of the agreement discussed in Geneva.

“We now count on the support of our European partners in our further steps.

“We look forward to organizing a visit of Ukraine’s President to the US at the earliest suitable date in November to complete final steps and make a deal with President Trump.”

Last week Trump ramped up pressure on Zelensky to endorse a plan by Thanksgiving - November 27.

Meanwhile, civilian casualties were reported on each side early Tuesday as Russia pressed ahead with its war.

In Kyiv, Ukrainian officials said at least six people were killed and another 14 injured in a Russian attack, according to NBC News.

Russian officials said three people were killed and 10 more injured in an overnight aerial attack they blamed on Ukraine in the city of Taganrog, in the border Rostov region.

Since Russia launched its invasion in February 2022, 300,000 people have been killed.
