Zayn Malik and Gigi Hadid's reported split is said to have come about after he caused tension in the relationship by accusing her mum of leaking their pregnancy news.
The former One Direction star, 28, and model, 26, welcomed daughter Khai in September last year.
And insiders claim that falling pregnant during lockdown meant the couple were hoping to keep their baby news completely under wraps until Gigi had given birth.
Now that the couple have reportedly split amid accusations that Zayn struck his fiancée's mother Yolanda - which he denies - it's said that his belief Yolanda was the one who leaked their pregnancy was behind the tension between them.
A source told The Sun: "Tension really started between Yolanda and Zayn last year when he suspected she was the one who leaked their pregnancy news in the first place.
"Gigi and Zayn didn't want to announce it publicly until after Gigi gave birth. With lockdown, it was the perfect time to give them that privacy they never would have had otherwise.
"They were so grateful for that privacy and they were very upset when it came out. Zayn is a very, very private person and while dating him, Gigi has become a lot more private too."
Before Zayn and Gigi publicly revealed they were expecting their first child together, Yolanda had liked some social media posts discussing speculation that they had a baby on the way.
She then appeared to confirm the pregnancy by telling a Netherlands broadcasting station: "Of course we are so excited. I am excited to become Oma in September especially after I lost my mom so recently."
Yolanda, who has refused to comment when approached in Manhattan, accused Zayn of hitting her during an argument.
Zayn said in a statement: "I adamantly deny striking Yolanda Hadid and for the sake of my daughter I decline to give any further details and I hope that Yolanda will reconsider her false allegations and move towards healing these family issues in private."
A source has also said that this might not be the end of the road for the couple, who have split and reconciled multiple times in the past.
The insider said they "need time apart" but that they'd "never say never" when it comes to them getting back together.
The Mirror has contacted Zayn, Gigi and Yolanda's representatives for comment.
