Zawe Ashton says acting and absurdity inspired her first book

Zawe Ashton has said she was inspired to write her first book by some of the “awful” character descriptions she has read in her career.

The actor, who is currently appearing in the West End in Betrayal with Tom Hiddleston and Charlie Cox, said Character Breakdown is a “work of fiction, but mostly fact”.

She told A List: “It’s based on some of the awful character breakdowns that you sometimes receive as an actress when you go for an audition. Some of them are very two-dimensional.

“I didn’t want to write an actor’s memoir. I knew I wanted to do something more unconventional.” Ashton’s publisher described the book as a “unique look at life, work and the absurdities of contemporary life”.

Ashton was speaking at the Pat McGrath A Techicolour Odyssey party at Selfridges, also attended by Brooklyn Beckham and girlfriend Hana Cross.
