Zara offering 40% off almost everything for Black Friday as M&S and Next bow out

Fashion chain Zara is offering up to 40% off this weekend as part of its Black Friday sales event.

The Spanish retail giant, which offered members early access on Thursday, said thousands of lines have been reduced online as part of its pre-Christmas clearance.

It comes as figures show more than £2million will be spent a minute over the next 24-hours as shoppers take to the web amid ongoing lockdown restrictions.

More than two-thirds of shoppers have delayed a purchase to try to find a bargain in the Black Friday sale, according to research by Lloyds Bank.

It expects spending in the UK to jump to £750million this year.

However, while chains such as Zara will be using the event to top up annual losses, some big names have decided to shun the Black Friday shopping bonanza altogether.

Next, Wilko and B&M have confirmed they will not be taking part in this year’s sales event.

High Street stalwart Marks & Spencer has also decided not to take part.

A spokesperson said: “We focus on offering great value and deals throughout the whole festive season.”

The festive period will be crucial for the firm after it was forced to announce 7,000 job cuts due to pandemic-induced losses.

Homeware chain Wilko also said there would be "no specific Black Friday activity", and that it offered "great value products at great prices every day".

Discount chain B&M said that selling products at a lower price point throughout the festive trading period instead "avoids excessive crowds on any one day."

The company said that Black Friday shoppers are often "chasing largely deceptive offers that do not represent real savings, or are only available in very limited stocks."

Consumer group Which? recently found that nearly nine in 10 products sold on Black Friday are available for the same price or cheaper earlier in the year.

It urged consumers to compare prices online and use a shopping list, to avoid any impulse purchases.
