Zante fire: UK Government issues warning to tourists after blaze breaks out on the Greek holiday island

A wildfire has engulfed part of the Greek island of Zante, reportedly forcing tourists to be evacuated from a hotel.

Thousands of people flock from Newcastle International Airport to the Greek holiday island every year.

Airline Tui offers direct flights to the island, also known as Zakynthos.

The British Government has now issued a warning after the blaze broke out on Sunday (September 15).

A statement posted shortly after 7pm on the Gov.UK website states: "A wildfire has been reported on Zakynthos, close to Keri Village.

"If you’re in the area, you should follow the advice of Greek authorities and monitor the website of the General Secretariat for Civil Protection."

Reports from Greece state some residents from homes in the South of Keri had to be evacuated.

Around 120 tourists have also been evacuated from a hotel and moved to another venue away from the flames.

Wildfires raged on the island earlier this summer and back in 2017. Greek politicians blamed the latter on arsonists.

The cause of the current fire has not yet been confirmed.
