Zander Clark ready for Scotland chance after pulling on Craig Gordon's Hearts gloves

Zander Clark is ready to fight to be Scotland’s No.1.

The new Hearts keeper replaced Craig Gordon at Tynecastle when the veteran suffered a horror leg break in a game against Dundee United last month. Now 30-year-old Clark (left) could be about to do likewise for his country after making an impressive start to life with the Jambos. The former St Johnstone star has been outstanding for high-flying Hearts since he was thrown into the fray by gaffer Robbie Neilson.

With vital Euro 2024 qualifiers coming up in March, national team boss Steve Clarke has been left short of options in goal. Now Tynecastle new boy Clark – a regular in Scotland squads while he was at McDiarmid Park – is determined to grasp the opportunity if selected. Clark, who spent the summer without a club after leaving Saints until Hearts snapped him up, said: “There’s a space that’s opened up.

“I haven’t been in the last few squads because I haven’t played a lot of football during that time. My main aim is to do well for Hearts and if that catches the eye of the Scotland manager and gets me included, brilliant.

“If I can get picked for the next one, there is an opening for somebody new to go and play. If I put in performances like I have been doing, it will go a long way to helping my cause.

“Playing at Hearts might help too because it’s a massive club But I’ve been in squads before at St Johnstone.

“It’s about your ability and how well you are playing. We’ve got some great goalkeepers in the Scotland ranks.

“But now I’m back playing, it’s up to me to give them something to think about.”

Clark revealed 74-times capped Gordon is helping him fill his gloves: “We speak about games past and ones coming up. I try to take wee pointers from him. It’s great to get his feedback.”
