Zander Clark insists St Johnstone thrive on underdog tag ahead of Galatasaray showdown

Zander Clark frustrated brassed off Galatasaray fans in Istanbul to keep St Johnstone’s Euro dreams alive.

Now the Perth No.1 is expecting Saints supporters packing McDiarmid to turn up the heat on the Turks tonight.

Callum Davidson’s men produced one of the club’s best ever European results to exit Turkey with a 1-1 draw.

They’ll need a repeat performance to progress to the play-off stage of the Europa League and a double header with Danish side Randers.

And Clark, 29, said: “It was a brilliant experience last week.

“I loved the atmosphere being there with everyone against you.

“Even most people back home wrote us off, which is something we thrive on.

“We weathered a storm in the first 15 minutes or so while we got used to the pace of the game and the way they play.

“But once we settled into it, we caused them problems.

“There are areas where we feel we can get at them so we will look to focus on that and see what we can take advantage of.”

With Galatasaray crashing out of the Champions League after a 7-2 aggregate loss to PSV Eindhoven, Clark knew the Turkish stars would be jittery.

He said: “I don’t know how they were feeling at the end, they just walked off the park so that maybe tells you.

“They were getting frustrated, the crowd was getting on their back at times near the end.

“They took a short corner and the place went mental. But that’s credit to us.

“With the press we had, we were able to harry them and nick it off them in dangerous areas and it’s just disappointing we didn’t make more of it.

“They started fast on us across there, we were backs to the wall in the first quarter of an hour.

“So we know what they will try to do and it’s up to us to keep them back in their own half as much as we can.”

Cup double winner Clark is relishing the prospect of another big European night at a sold-out McDiarmid Park.

And he’s expecting fans starved of football to pump up the volume as Saints look to finish the job.
