Zak Lovelace to Rangers transfer earns blunt Millwall response as unimpressed Gary Rowett vents at 'driving forces'

Frustrated Millwall boss Gary Rowett has questioned the "driving forces" behind Zak Lovelace 's move away from the club as he nears a move to Rangers.

Record Sport first revealed in January the Ibrox side were on the trail of the striker and the Light Blues have beaten a host of clubs to land the player who made his top-team debut in the Championship for the Lions at the age of just 15. He is the second youngest player to ever appear for the club and even had to get permission from his school to play. He's set to join up with Rangers ' B team after his contract expired on July 1.

New Den boss Rowett has frequently allowed Lovelace to train with the first team but, speaking earlier this year, admitted he was powerless to stop him leaving Millwall. English Premier League pair Leicester City and Brighton were just two of the top flight clubs linked with a move for him but the Europa League finalists are the preferred option of the highly-rated prospect.

Rowett conceded Millwall have been left in the dark over Lovelace's future following the expiry of his contract. The disappointed boss has question the decision behind a move away from the London side, having come through the academy ranks at the club.

Rowett told fan site News at Den : “Obviously he hasn’t signed a contract yet. At the moment if another club comes in that’s something we’ll find out. It’s out of our hands, really.

“We want him to stay, we’ve always wanted him to stay but sometimes different driving forces means that doesn’t happen. We’ll wait and see how that plays out.

“It would be a shame. He’s obviously a player that has come through the academy, they’ve worked hard with him, put in lots of hours and you want to see that come to fruition if possible.”
