Zain Westbrooke targets promotion in first interview after joining Bristol Rovers from Coventry City

Zain Westbrooke has made it clear he is targeting promotion in his first interview after joining Bristol Rovers.

The 23-year-old's move from League One champions Coventry City to the Gas was confirmed on Monday, with the midfielder penning a three-year deal to become Rovers' sixth signing of the summer.

Growing optimism from Gasheads surrounds the club, and Westbrooke shares that excitement as he looks to play a prominent role in Ben Garner's revolution.

"I’m really happy to get it over the line," Westbrooke told the club's website.

"We’ve been talking for a few weeks now and I’m really happy that I can start here and continue to push on.

"I’ve been speaking to the Gaffer for a bit now and he’s really sold me on the project and the direction the club is intending to go in. That’s exactly what I’m intending to do in my career.

"I had a really good season last year with Coventry, playing a big part in promotion, but I’m looking to get that again and not be a bit-part player. I want to have a main stake.

"I’ve spoken to the gaffer and he wants to get promoted. That’s his aim, and that’s also mine.

"It’s exciting for the fans because they can see the club’s ambition already. There’s not too many clubs that are moving, but the gaffer’s made it clear what his intentions are and he’s making that known to everyone."

Westbrooke played a big role in Coventry's promotion-winning campaign, but with the Sky Blues' midfield ranks bolstered ahead of the new season, and starting chances likely to be limited, the former Brentford playmaker is eager to show he can be the main man at Rovers.

"To get one promotion in your career you’re lucky, and I got one at 23 and I’m hoping to get another one this year," he continued.

"I feel like now is my time to change, progress more and become a bigger part in the team. I feel like I can do that here and have a big season.

"The gaffer has shown me a pathway and something new for me to unlock in myself.

"More games is what I need, and I need more goals and more assists to push me and the club on. That’s what I’m looking to do.

"I got a few goals and a few game-winning goals which was big in a promotion season, but four goals and six assists, I’m looking to get more this season.

"I’m a technical midfielder, I like to get hold of the game and like to get goals and assists. I want to be moving forward, making runs forward and helping the team win.

"I’ve been back training a little bit already and I’m looking to jump straight in and get to know the boys, play some games and get familiar with the surroundings here."
