Zadie Smith's husband adds to family fortunes

The finances of Zadie Smith's marital household have swelled by £40,000 in one week. Last week her novel On Beauty won the £30,000 Orange prize.

Yesterday Utterly Monkey, a lad-lit novel written by her husband, the poet Nick Laird, won the £10,000 Betty Trask award, administered by the Society of Authors. The Trask prize - not one for which poets are usually entered - is broadly for romantic fiction.

Utterly Monkey, say the publishers, Fourth Estate, is about "aspirations, belonging, the epiphanies of daily life and, best of all, getting the girl."
