Former Canberran Zachary Rolfe will stand trial in the Northern Territory Supreme Court over the shooting death of teenager Kumanjayi Walker last year.
Mr Rolfe, a Northern Territory police constable, was charged with murder following the incident last November when the 19-year-old was fatally shot during an arrest attempt in the remote Aboriginal community of Yuendumu.
Alice Springs Local Court judge John Birch's decision to commit Mr Rolfe to stand trial came after a three-day committal hearing in September.
During the September hearing, Mr Rolfe's defence team claimed their client acted in self-defence.
Mr Birch also issued a suppression order that prevents the media reporting on the reasons for committing the case to trial.
Mr Rolfe, who is in Canberra while on bail, appeared in court via video link as Mr Birch handed down his decision. He is suspended from the police force with pay, and his bail has been extended until his November 25 court date.
Supporters of Mr Walker welcomed the news the matter will go to trial, with some supporters celebrating outside the court after the decision was made.
"Our families and communities are incredibly overwhelmed with positive emotions," a post on the "Justice For Walker" Facebook page said.
"There were so many tears on the court lawns today ... thank you all for your continued love and support."
