Zach Wilson is not giving Jets fans a thumbs down for booing his poor Week 2 performance against the Patriots.
Jets fans did not hold back on voicing their dissatisfaction with Wilson’s play in their return to MetLife Stadium on Sunday afternoon, smattering the rookie quarterback with boos as he tossed four interceptions and failed to lead New York’s offense to a touchdown.
Unlike some of his fellow New York athletes, Wilson managed to take his first — and hopefully last — round of boos from Jets fans in stride. The way Wilson sees it, there is no reason for the Gang Green faithful to be satisfied with his play when he himself is not.
“They should be disappointed,” Wilson said. “I thought our defense played well. They deserve to see good football. We work our butts off to be able to come in here and play well and it’s so tough when we don’t do that.
“I’m not paying attention to it, but they should be booing. We didn’t play well on offense. Our defense gave us a chance to win and we didn’t execute, we didn’t move the ball well, we didn’t score any points. We have to do a better job there.”
Wilson finished 19-33 for 210 yards, but his four interceptions cost the Jets any chance to get into a rhythm offensively. Three of Wilson’s four interceptions were thrown in the first half, leaving New York’s defense fatigued and on the field far longer than it should have been. 17 of the Patriots’ 25 points came directly off Wilson’s mishaps as a result.
Next weekend’s trip to Denver represents an opportunity for Wilson to bounce back. It won’t be easy going up against the Broncos and a stout Vic Fangio-coached defense, but Wilson is up for the task of getting back on track after letting his team and the fanbase down in Week 2.
“We’re going to do what we can this week to get better and just hit that reset button,” Wilson said. “Keep learning from all these things.”
