Zach Braff Confirmed To Return To Scrubs Reboot As JD So Bring Out The Shower Shorts

Zach Braff will be reprising his role of JD in the upcoming Scrubs reboot, and guess who has two thumbs and can’t contain their excitement? (It’s me).

Back in December 2024, a reboot of the beloved sitcom Scrubs was confirmed to be in the works at ABC in the US with its original creator, Bill Lawrence, at the helm. At the time, no one knew whether it would be a reboot with a whole new cast (like the disastrous attempt in season nine of the original series) or whether the initial cast would be returning.

Now, Lawrence has confirmed that the 50-year-old actor will be returning to the new iteration as the beloved sweet pea John “JD” Dorian.

“I wanted Zach to be in this because he’s been directing mostly lately, and I think people forget he’s a really, really good actor,” Lawrence told Deadline.

“And for a while, it just tickled me for him to be playing a doctor again. I’m like, what is J.D.’s life — that’s straight from the book — what if J.D.’s life had taken a bad turn.”

Over the years, Zach Braff has been pretty upfront about his desire to bring back the show and be involved.

During the pandemic, he launched a podcast called Fake Doctors, Real Friends with his friend and co-star Donald Faison (Turk), in which they rewatched the show and gave fans behind-the-scenes info. With fellow cast members appearing as guests on the show, they often chat about how keen they’d be to bring the show back.

In an interview with Michael Rosenbaum on his Inside of You podcast, Braff spoke about how much he missed the on-set environment of Scrubs.

“I miss laughing every day. Belly laughing every day was –— that was the job. And when that goes away, by the time nine years were over, we were sort of all exhausted by it,” Braff reflected.

“When we signed up to do our show, they can put you under a pretty insane contract of, like, seven years and stuff, which I wouldn’t do again but some sort of a limited thing? You’re basically saying, ‘Do you wanna go get the gang back together and fucking laugh your ass off with some of your best friends and be paid well?’ Yeah, that sounds amazing.”

Creator Bill Lawrence — who has since been at the helm of A+ television shows including Shrinking and Bad Monkey — told Deadline that his vision for Scrubs 2.0 is a mixture between a revival and a reboot, with old characters mixing old characters with brand new ones.

“We’ve been talking about a lot, and I think the only real reason to do it is a combo,” Lawrence said.

“A: people wanting to see what the world of medicine was like for the people they love, which is part of any successful reboot. But B: I think that show always worked because you get to see young people dropped into the world of medicine, knowing young people who go there are super idealistic and are doing it because it’s a calling.

“There’s no cliché ‘rich doctors playing golf’ — that’s not what it is anymore. So I think that, no matter what it is, it would be a giant mistake not to do as a combo of those two things.”

Admittedly, before I knew Lawrence and Braff were signed on to the reboot, I was nervous. Now, I’m just excited.

Although we didn’t necessarily need a Scrubs reboot, it feels like a welcome little treat.

EAAAAAGGGGLLLLLEEEEEE!!!!!!

If you’ve got a hankering to watch the OG Scrubs, you can re-watch all seasons on Stan.
