Zac Taylor explains why Bengals are starting offseason a week late

As one of eight teams with a new head coach, the Cincinnati Bengals get an early chance at an offseason program in April.

A new head coach is allowed to start the offseason program two weeks early on April 1.

But Taylor chose to let everyone start on April 9, instead.

“If you did that, you would have to take a week off, probably Memorial (Day) Week,” Taylor said, according to Bengals.com. “I did not want to take a week, do all this work and then take a week off, they’re not lifting, they’re not running, they’re not practicing and then come back. To us, it just made more sense, start a week later, do it all consecutively and then when they’re done for the summer they’re done and we’ve got good consecutive work in.”

In other words, Taylor didn’t want to have an odd week off in the middle of the program. He’ll start it later instead and let it run consecutively.

Here’s an upcoming look at the important dates:

  • April 9: Phase One Begins
  • April 15: Local college players’ workout
  • April 19: Zac Taylor pre-draft news conference, 11:30 a.m.
  • April 23-25: Voluntary minicamp
  • April 25-27: 2018 NFL Draft
