Zac Efron's 'terrifying' knife fight with homeless man prompted him to get sober

Movie star Zac Efron had a fraught encounter with a homeless man that saw him joining Alcoholics Anonymous.

The High School Musical star, 32, star got into a physical fight back in March 2014 that went on to have a big impact on his life.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter later that year, Zac opened up about the fraught encounter.

Zac explained: "I had a friend come pick me up late at night – we were looking for a place downtown to get a bite and catch up.

"We were having trouble finding somewhere – a lot of places were closed – and the car ran out of gas off the 110.

"It was ridiculous. We had to pull over, and I called Uber.

"A homeless guy, or vagrant, tapped on the driver's-side window.

"Before I knew it, [the friend] was out of the car, and they started fighting.

"I saw that [the homeless man] was carrying some sort of knife, or shank, and I got out of the car to disarm him."

Zac went on to refer to the brawl as "the most terrifying moment in my life".

Following this encounter, Zac went on to join Alcoholics Anonymous to deal with his relationship to drink.

He went on to note what a transformative effect it has had on his life, saying: "I'm much more comfortable in my own skin. Things are so much easier now."

The High School Musical star did comment on how the struggle of addiction is a constant and doesn't end, however.

Meanwhile, fans of Zac have a brand new Netflix series to look forward to binge-watching.

Down to Earth with Zac Efron sees the Bad Neighbours actor travel the world with wellness expert Darin Olien to find ways to live healthier and more sustainable lives.

One episode sees Zac visit London and explore the impact of plastic pollution in the River Thames.

In the instalment, Zac teamed up with environmental charity Thames21 and a local Thames21 volunteer River Action Group for a clean-up and to address the important issue.

"These areas are key green spaces for Londoners and important nursery grounds for fish and birds," commented Chris Coode, Thames21 deputy CEO.
