Za Za Bazaar fire: 'There were huge amounts of smoke inside'

A witness says he smelled burning at Bristol harbourside before spotting a "huge amount" of smoke inside one of the waterfront restaurants.

Firefighters cordoned off Za Za Bazaar and BSB this morning (Saturday, September 5) following a fire, and Pero's Bridge was also taped off.

Chris Farr was nearby at about 8am when he noticed fire engines and a strong smell.

He said: "I was out exercising and was passing through the centre. I saw the first fire engines and could smell burning so headed to the harbour.

"I could see a huge amount of smoke inside [Za Za Bazaar].

"I couldn't see flames, but the windows were full of smoke."

He said the fire seemed "major" but that crews on scene seemed to have it under control, and instructed passers-by to move back in case the windows were to break.

He then saw firefighters inside on the upper floor, breaking a window to release some of the smoke.

Chris said there were about seven fire engines in the area.

Avon Fire and Rescue Service has asked people to avoid the area if they can.

Bristol Live is awaiting further details from the fire service and the bar.

The cordon was lifted earlier this afternoon.
