Yvette Mimieux dead: Actress who starred in The Time Machine dies weeks after turning 80

Yvette Mimieux has died just weeks after her 80th birthday a family representative has confirmed.

The actress passed away in her sleep of natural causes it has been revealed.

Her most memorable role came in the 1960 George Pal-directed film version of HG Wells' novel titled The Time Machine, where she starred alongside Rod Taylor.

Shortly after her performance she was handed a long-term contract with MGM.

She later went on to star in movies such as Where The Boys Are, Platinum High School, Mr Lucky, Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, and Light in the Piazza.

On the small screen she made two appearances as a guest star on the Richard Chamberlain series Dr Kildare where she played the role of a surfer who was dealing with leprosy.

She also starred on The Most Deadly Game, replacing Inger Stevens who died a month before production began.

Her final acting role came in 1992 when she starred in TV movie Lady Boss.

Away from acting, she was also a successful writer and penned a thriller for Spelling and Leonard.

She was married three times, firstly to Evan Harland Engber before wedding and divorcing director Stanley Donen.

She is survived by her husband of 36 years, Howard F Ruby.

Deadline reports there will be no memorial service as the actress kept her personal life private.

Fans took to social media to send messages of condolences following the news.

One Twitter user wrote: "I always felt for Yvette Mimieux. She was tough, smart, and had so much more to offer than wispy, blonde fragility.

"She succeeded in overcoming the typecasting in her television work, where she also wrote and produced. Death Takes a Holiday is magic. She was magic. Rest in Peace"

Another penned: "R.I.P. Yvette Mimieux. #TheTimeMachine." while a third paid tribute to her and her career, writing: "Yvette Mimieux was really wonderful in a tricky role in LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA (1962). A marvelous performance in an excellent film. RIP."

A fourter user wrote: "Yvette Mimieux loomed large over my childhood because of The Time Machine and The Black Hole. RIP at 80."
