YSRTP chief YS Sharmila detained, starts 'hunger strike' as Telangana police decline permission for padayatra

HYDERABAD: Even as she was detained by police, who accused her of "violence", YSR Telangana Party (YSRTP) chief YS Sharmila on Friday started a hunger strike, demanding "democracy to be protected in Telangana".

Sharmila was earlier detained by the police. She was staging a protest at Tank Bund Ambedkar Statue after Warangal Police denied permission for padayatra there.

"I am sitting here on hunger strike demanding democracy to be protected in Telangana and that I will be allowed to do my padyatra," Sharmila said.

She said her supporters were beaten up even as she was detained for violence.

"KCR [Telangana chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao] is trying his best to stop my padyatra. My bus was burnt, my people were beaten up and they accused me of violence. Later, they arrested me and took me to Hyderabad. Next day, the court granted permission to do padyatra but police are allowing us," ANI quoted her as saying.

"YSRTP chief YS Sharmila has been detained by the police," Rajesh Chandra, DCP, Central Zone, said, adding, "She was staging a protest at Tank Bund Ambedkar Statue after Warangal Police denied permission for padayatra there."
