YouTubing tantalizes kids

YouTuber ranked 15th among the jobs that first-year elementary school boys hope to have someday, according to a survey released Wednesday by chemical maker Kuraray Co. It was the first time for YouTuber to rank within the top 20 jobs.

Kuraray asked 4,000 boys and girls who started elementary school this spring which jobs they wanted to do in the future. Professional athlete was the top choice for boys, while working at a cake shop or bakery was the most popular choice for girls. The top positions have remained unchanged for 20 consecutive years.

Among boys who said they wished to become professional athletes, 54.9 percent chose soccer, while baseball was the choice for 24.1 percent. The latter figure was up from 17.8 percent last year, a record low.

"[The kids] probably drew inspiration from Shohei Ohtani, who has switched to the U.S. major leagues, among other athletes," a Kuraray official said.

YouTuber has been moving up the rankings since its first appearance on the list in 2016. Initially ranked 54th, the profession climbed to 25th last year.

The results also showed that girls are interested in fashion even at a young age, as beautician came eighth and beauty-related jobs such as manicurist were ranked 14th.
