YouTuber reviews both Jeremy Clarkson and James May's pubs - who comes out on top?

A YouTuber has visited both Jeremy Clarkson and James May’s pubs to compare the two - and his verdict may surprise you.

Clarkson and May, who along with Richard Hammond have hosted Top Gear and The Grand Tour for the last 20 years, have enjoyed a friendly rivalry since they both entered the hospitality industry.

May has co-owned The Royal Oak in Swallowcliffe, Wiltshire, for several years, while Clarkson has been running The Farmer's Dog in Asthall near Burford since August 2024.

YouTuber Gary Eats, a food reviewer with almost 400,000 subscribers, recently visited both establishments to pit the presenters against each other.

The video, uploaded only yesterday, has already racked up over 250,000 views.

Starting at The Royal Oak, a picturesque, quiet pub in the Cotswolds, Gary had nothing but praise for the service and food.

The YouTuber had a pint of bitter and a flat iron steak - with the staff happily changing the sauce on the steak at Gary’s request.

Gary described his main as “absolutely brilliant” - and he was even more impressed with his dessert, an enormous sticky toffee pudding.

He said: “The toffee sauce, holy moly, that is sweet. That's the way you do it!

"This is a beautiful pub, I love this place. Absolutely bang on. Jeremy, you're under pressure!"

On arriving at The Farmer’s Dog, Gary immediately noted the difference between the two pubs, with Clarkson’s pub notably busier.

Once inside, he ordered for the ham hock terrine to start, followed by a gammon steak, requesting whichever ale the staff recommended.

Again, Gary loved the food: "That, to me, is a perfect piece of gammon. It's got a lovely saltiness in there, but the thing about it is how it cuts. Super tender."

And the final result?

Gary Eats loved them both, but he ended up rating The Swallowcliffe a smidge higher than The Farmer's Dog.

May beat Clarkson by one point, 47 to 46 - is it time for Hammond to buy a pub to see who ends up on top?
