YouTube, Gmail and Google Maps apps will be blocked on millions of phones this month

Millions of phones will soon lose access to popular apps such Gmail, YouTube and Google Maps.

Google will be blocking access to the services on older smartphones from September 27 because of privacy concerns with the older tech.

According to the tech corporation, it is Android devices that will be impacted by the removal of the apps - namely devices operating Android 2.3.7 software or lower.

Smartphones that remain stuck with Android 2.3 include Sony Xperia Advance, Lenovo K800, Sony Xperia Go, Vodafone Smart II, Samsung Galaxy S2, Sony Xperia P, LG Spectrum, Sony Xperia S, LG Prada 3.0, HTC Velocity, HTC Evo 4G, Motorola Fire, and Motorola XT532.

As reported by Birmingham Live, Google said the move is "part of our going efforts to keep our users safe".

The three apps are among the most widely used, and so people with older Android phones may need to either update their device or begin looking for alternatives.

The news follows reports that messaging app WhatsApp will also stop working on a number of Android and Apple devices later this year.

Google said: "As part of our ongoing efforts to keep our users safe, Google will no longer allow sign-in on Android devices that run Android 2.3.7 or lower starting September 27, 2021.

"If you sign into your device after September 27, you may get username or password errors when you try to use Google products and services like Gmail, YouTube, and Maps.

"If your device has the ability to update to a newer Android version (3.0+), we advise you to do so in order to maintain access to Google apps and services on that device."
