YouTube 'digital premiere' for new Tyneside Cinema film - with a Hollywood touch

A film premiere would usually be a night of Champagne, glitz and glamour.

However, a new film about the history of the Tyneside Cinema is having to settle for a "virtual" world premiere - on YouTube.

With cinemas closed around the world due to Covid-19, the Newcastle venue was forced to think outside the box for the first screening of 'The Dream Palace'.

It will now be live-streamed on YouTube this Sunday (May 17) - and the event will benefit from a little bit of star power.

Hollywood star Andrea Riseborough will sprinkle some Tinseltown magic over the premier.

The Newcastle-born actress, who appeared in Birdman and Mandy, is a patron of the cinema and will appear in a post-screening Q&A of the documentary, which she features in.

Chief executive of the Tyneside Cinema, Holli Keeble, said: "I'm very proud to be able to share this moving and timely documentary with audiences in Newcastle and across the globe.”

Made in 2017 with support for Heritage Lottery Fund to celebrate the Cinema’s 80th birthday, this will be the first time The Dream Palace has been made available online.

Following the premiere, audiences will be able to watch Alex Ayre's film until May 24, 2020.

"The film documents the unique 80-year history of Newcastle's TynesideCinema and the role in which it plays in the community, but also tells a much bigger story about the significance of cinemas and cinema-going that many people will relate to.

“Celebrating this collective heritage - one that we are eager to return to - is particularly pertinent during the current pandemic."

The film also features appearances from Sir Ridley Scott and Ken Loach, who directed 'I, Daniel Blake'.

It comes weeks after the beloved cinema revealed it may not survive the coronavirus crisis.

A fundraising campaign has also been launched to support the independent cinema during the period.

The film will premiere on the cinema's YouTube channel at 7pm.
