Youths throw missiles at police during 'confrontation' in North Belfast

Police were attacked with missiles by groups of youths following a "confrontation" in North Belfast tonight.

The PSNI say they were on foot patrol in New Lodge and Tiger's Bay when they received reports of groups of youths meeting up and confronting one another.

Officers attended the incident and came under fire from the young people who threw bottles, stones and a "fairly unpleasant chair leg"

Nobody was injured during the incident, however police say it could have affected older and vulnerable residents living in the area.

A PSNI spokesperson said: "Court North Neighbourhood officers and Evidence Gathering colleagues have been on foot and vehicle patrol in Tigers Bay and New Lodge this evening after reports of young people gathering and confronting each other.

"Unfortunately when police attended to ensure this didn’t happen, young people in both areas threw several items including bottles, stones and this fairly unpleasant chair leg.

"Nobody injured and nothing damaged, but the large numbers of young people need to think hard about what they are doing, and in particular how the older and vulnerable people in the local area are feeling, especially under current circumstances.

"Police will be in the area all evening. Thanks for your support."
