Harehills riots: Leeds youths throw fireworks at police and set bins alight in bonfire night street battle

Youths threw fireworks at police officers in riot gear and bins were set alight on a night of disorder in Leeds.

Vehicles belonging to West Yorkshire Police were also damaged in the bonfire night disturbance.

Emergency services started receiving reports of disorder at about 8.30pm, with the complaints centring in the Harehills Road area of the West Yorkshire city.

Roads were closed as offices with riot shields and helmets worked to disperse the youths involved in the unrest.

Police said no one was injured and that several arrests had been made.

"A number of people have been arrested and investigations are currently ongoing to identify all those involved," West Yorkshire Police said in a statement.

"No-one was reported to have been injured, however police vehicles were damaged."

Police Chief Superintendent Damien Miller said: “In conjunction with our partner agencies, we have prepared for all possible eventualities over the bonfire period.

“We made it clear from the outset that any instances of disorder or antisocial behaviour would not be tolerated and we were able to quickly respond.

“Those individuals that engage in such behaviour are within the minority and do not represent the wider community.

“We will continue to provide reassurance in the local area with high visibility patrols.”
