Youths 'spoken to' after huge fire deliberately started on sand dunes

Three youths were spoken to after sand dunes were deliberately set on fire at Crosby beach.

Crews were called to Mariners Road in the Sefton town just before 7pm on Sunday following reports of a large fire on the coast.

When they arrived, the sand and grassy area was well alight and firefighters spent the next 30 minutes extinguishing the blaze.

A high-pressure reel, buckets of water and beaters were used to get rid of the flames.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said there were several seats of fire which could have easily have spread out of control.

Police also attended the scene and spoke with three youths who were at the scene.

They were asked about what happened, but there was not enough evidence linking them to the ignition, so no further action was taken.

The incident caused anger among people in Crosby and one person said: "We are all for people enjoying outdoors, but cretins like those who set dunes on fire should stay indoors, preferably behind bars."

A spokeswoman for Merseyside Police said: "We received reports that fires had been started deliberately in the Crosby beach area at around 6.50pm yesterday (Sunday 7 March).

"Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) attended and extinguished the fires.

"Officers spoke with three youths at the scene."

Community Policing Inspector Duncan Swann: “Starting fires deliberately in the manner we saw in Crosby last night is utterly irresponsible, putting our communities at risk and placing an unnecessary strain on our already overstretched emergency services.

“Thankfully the fire service extinguished the fire before anyone was harmed, but this reckless disregard for people and property is simply not acceptable in Merseyside and we are determined to identify those responsible.
